A Comprehensive Update Brings Steam Deck Compatibility to Classic Metal Gear Solid Titles
- Jan 30, 2024
In a significant advancement for the iconic Metal Gear Solid series, the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 has received a crucial update, enhancing the collection's compatibility with the portable gaming platform, the Steam Deck. This collection brings together some of Konami's most celebrated titles, incorporating the original trilogy from the PlayStation 1 and 2 eras, as well as the classic NES installments. Additionally, the collection enriches fans' experience through the inclusion of the Metal Gear Solid graphic novels and comprehensive art books dedicated to each title in the series.
This update aligns with a series of major announcements regarding the Metal Gear franchise, including the highly anticipated confirmation by Konami of the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, touted as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Notably, this remake promises the return of the original voice actors, featuring the renowned David Hayter reprising his signature role as Solid Snake.
Users of the Steam Deck will appreciate the latest enhancements made to the Master Collection. The official social media updates from the Metal Gear team have announced the addition of Steam Deck support for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and the bonus features within the Master Collection Vol. 1. Prior to the release of the Version 1.4.1 update, the original Metal Gear Solid and NES iterations were already playable on the Steam Deck.
The increase in Steam Deck support is accompanied by the 1.4.1 update to the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1, which comes on the heels of the previous 1.4.0 update. The latter had implemented a host of improvements aimed at enhancing the user experience—ranging from graphic adjustments with a new "smoothing" option to more granular audio controls enabling distinct sound levels for the main menu and gameplay. It also introduced a "windowed" mode for desktop players and allowed for customization of display resolution to cater to various preferences, including standard formats, 16:9 widescreen, and "pixel-perfect" options. Several targeted fixes were also introduced for Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 to refine gameplay.
With the projected 2024 launch of the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, fans are eagerly looking forward to new developments within the series. Speculations abound over Konami's potential projects, such as a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid and the possibility of a second volume for the Master Collection—potentially featuring Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Rising. This latest update, enhancing compatibility with the Steam Deck, offers fans an additional medium through which to relish the beloved Metal Gear Solid saga.
