Esports Now Recognised as Part of Multi-Sport Event by Indian Government
- Dec 29, 2022
Esports is a type of competitive video gaming that has been rapidly growing in popularity over the past few years. It has been gaining recognition from major international events and organizations, such as the International Olympic Association. Now, the Indian Government has taken a major step by recognizing Esports as part of multi-sport events, to be taken care of by the Department of Sports.
The government has taken steps to include Esports in the country's curriculum, and the International Olympic Association (IOC) has also taken steps to popularise the sport. This is a major boost for Esports enthusiasts in India as it will be included in multi-discipline events and could even be included in the Olympics.
On Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu issued a notification that amended the rules governing Esports and asked the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Sports Ministry to include it in multi-sport events.
The sport has already been included in the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games as a demonstration sport and is set to make its debut at the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China, next year. This is a great opportunity for the Indian DOTA 2 team, which clinched bronze at the first Commonwealth Esports Championship held in Birmingham in August.
Reacting to the report of its inclusion as a mainline sport, Lokesh Suji, director Esports Federation of India and vice-president of the Asian Esports Federation, said that the efforts of the fraternity had finally borne fruit. The inclusion of Esports in multi-sport events will give it the recognition and respect it truly deserves.
There will be more opportunities for players and the industry in general. It will also help in creating a positive image of Esports in the eyes of the public and will help in making it mainstream.
Conclusion
The recognition of Esports as part of multi-sport events by the Indian Government has been welcomed by the Esports fraternity. It is a major step forward for the sport and one that will provide more opportunities for Esports enthusiasts to compete and potentially win medals. The International Olympic Association's support for the growth of virtual sports within the Olympic Movement is also a positive development and will help bring Esports to a wider audience.
