Google Meet Update for Chrome: Multi-Pin Video and Picture-In-Picture

Google pays much attention to promoting and upgrading Meet, its video call, and conference service. While there is no dedicated Meet app for desktop platforms, it’s functioning within a browser as a web service. But as Google well knows, not all browsers are created equal. So it adds new features for Meet that are only available in Google’s native browser Chrome.

One of these features is the same that YouTube has been implementing for so long: picture-in-picture mode. In Meet, this mode makes quite a lot of sense. This allows for seeing up to four participants in their smaller video windows, which is reasonable especially if they do more than talking. These videos can be recorded and reviewed just like regular ones. PiP mode is available through the three-dot menu in the upper right corner.

Another new Chrome-exclusive feature of Meet is multi-pin video. Now presenters can attach more than one video feed to their presentation. This makes vide using various sources easier to adjust and watch or participate as one these sources.

All these features are available when using Google Meet in Chrome, regardless of the platform. Google Chrome is a cross-platform web browser, and while its mobile version is not said to support these new features (why while there’s a dedicated app?), all the desktop ones do. To use this, you need to update your Chrome to the latest version available.

Adding more features for advanced video conferencing, Google tries to outrun its upstart rival, Zoom. This sort of rivalry is typical for Google: YouTube introduced Shorts to compete with the master of short-form videos, TikTok. Let’s see whether the final users will benefit from this endless race.
