Riot Games Addresses Rumors of New Competitive Shooter Development Amid Deadlock Hype
- Oct 03, 2024
Recent speculation regarding a game in development by the studio of League of Legends and Valorant can be set aside as unfounded. The team is not working on a project that mirrors Deadlock, despite what some rumors suggest.
The communications manager at Riot Games has clarified the situation, addressing a viral rumor that implied a partnership with Tencent to create a competitive hero shooter. The claims are said to be exaggerated, with no basis in reality. The source of the information appeared on a 4Chan board and was not linked to any credible news outlet.
According to the communications manager, funding from Tencent does not take place in the way that has been put forward by these rumors. Riot Games is engaged in several projects behind the scenes, but none are expected to be similar to Valve's upcoming title. The focus remains firmly on their current developments.
Deadlock has a somewhat enigmatic history leading up to its announcement. Valve conducted several exclusive playtests this year, requesting participants to keep information confidential. However, details began to leak, comparing it to a blend of existing games, quickly garnering attention and enthusiasm before its formal reveal.
Though there is considerable excitement surrounding Deadlock, it has not yet been released, making it premature for other companies to draw inspiration from it. Even so, early testers have expressed fascination with the game. A former professional Overwatch player praised Deadlock as representing the future of the gaming industry, while Valve is implementing anti-cheat measures that were not included in Team Fortress 2.
Notably, developers from Risk of Rain were recently integrated into Valve, and one of the minds behind the acclaimed roguelike is already contributing to Deadlock's development.
