Time-Traveling Surprises Await in Doctor Who's Festive Special
- Nov 15, 2024
Fans of the iconic series are eagerly anticipating the festive special set for this year. With the premiere drawing near, writer Steven Moffat has shared intriguing insights that are sure to excite enthusiasts of the genre.
Envision a scenario where a hospitality company capitalized on the concept of time travel. Moffat mused in a recent dialogue with BBC South East about the potential ramifications. He posed a thought-provoking idea: what would a hotel do if they could access any moment in time? Their first action would likely be to market unsold bookings in their historic establishments across various eras.
At the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con event, attendees were given an exclusive first look at the upcoming holiday special titled 'Joy to the World.' Stars Millie Gibson and Ncuti Gatwa, along with showrunner Russell T Davies, captivated attendees during their presentation in Hall H. The trailer showcased the Doctor popping up in various significant locations—like Manchester in the 1940s, Everest Base Camp in the 1950s, and the Orient Express in the 1960s—quirkily inquiring whether patrons had ordered a "toasted sandwich with ham and cheese along with a pumpkin latte."
As the storyline unfolds, viewers see Nicola Coughlan's character arriving at the Sandringham Hotel in what appears to be modern London, immediately greeted by a rather serious receptionist who inquires about her single status. Her witty response, "Does it show?!" sets a light-hearted tone before she is shown to her rather pink room.
The scene swiftly shifts as the concierge departs to fetch her some towels, and then the Doctor, accompanied by a Silurian, makes a dramatic entrance offering her the same food and drink he was previously promoting. This twist raises questions about whether this encounter is merely coincidence or fate. Considering the beaming expression of the Time Lord upon their meeting, it seems more inclined towards the latter interpretation.
'Joy to the World' is anticipated to debut on BBC One and iPlayer during the Christmas season Day, although an official confirmation of the exact release date has yet to be provided. In the meantime, fans can explore our list of the most promising new television shows set to debut in 2024.
