YouTube Music: Do You Know This Song Was Also Sung by..?

If you’re really interested in music, you’ll appreciate the new feature by YouTube Music. If you are listening to a popular song, you’ll be able to see what other musicians have performed it and listen to their interpretations. These can be found in the “Other Performances” section on the “Related” tab, and there are many interesting things to discover.

So, you are listening to a frequently covered song, like Yesterday, Summertime, or Ain’t No Sunshine. The version you are listening to is great, but there are others, and some of them may even be better than the original. Sounds curious, doesn’t it? Well, now YouTube music comes up with answers.

To enter the section, you need to open the Now Playing tab in the app and then go to the “Related” tab. Scroll down under the “You might also like”, and you’ll see the “Other performances” section. There you’ll find other versions of the song, though not all of them – just the most viewed or listened.

It doesn’t work perfectly. For example, it obviously compares lyrics to avoid confusing different songs with the same name (like The Power of Love by Celine Dion and The Power of Love by Huey Lewis & The News). Sometimes it leads to paradoxes: if you search for “Ain’t No Sunshine”, you’ll easily find versions by Bill Withers, Lighthouse Family, or Joe Cocker. But the one by its real author Burt Bacharach will be omitted simply because it’s instrumental.

Anyway, it’s a great tool that enables music fans to discover new fantastic artists, comparing them to others in the most honest way – on the same material. While writing this, I have discovered some great singers who did their great versions of My Way, Walk on By, or Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, thanks to Other Performances.
