Spotify Mobile App Receives a Built-In Podcast Editor

Spotify has been heavily investing in the podcast industry in recent years. First, it added the podcast section to the app where users could listen to podcasts by approved authors. Then it purchased a specialized app for podcast editing named Anchor. But now, it becomes even easier to record your own podcast right in the main Spotify app.

The process of creation, according to the video released by the Swedish streaming giant, is simple. You only need to tap the “+” button to start editing your podcast. No external tools are necessary unless you want to use some special techniques not available in the default editor.

Despite being a built-in tool, the editor is quite powerful. You can record the entire podcast in one take or use multiple takes and then merge them into one. Then you can trim the entire audio or its parts and even add background music from the Spotify catalog (not the entire one, unfortunately, but only tracks chosen for this). The final step is giving your podcast episode a name and choosing the cover image (which you’ll have to make in third-party editing apps if necessary). Voila! You’re a podcaster.

Of course, the sound quality will probably be inferior to that of podcasts recorded in a studio with professional equipment. On the other hand, you need nothing but your phone to make an episode and publish it right away. If you are away from your habitual environment, hardly will you carry professional mics, mixers, or monitors with you? Then, an option to make everything with your phone is the solution.

So far, the tool is only available to users in New Zealand, which can be viewed as an extended testing phase. If everything goes right, soon, Spotify may release the update in other countries as well. No doubt this will result in thousands of low-quality podcasts, but there will certainly be real gems among them.

Have you ever recorded a podcast? If you decide to start, what will your podcast be about? Will you invite guests or only speak yourself? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
