WhatsApp Set to Introduce Username Search for Enhanced Privacy on Android
- Dec 05, 2023
WhatsApp is advancing its features by testing the ability for users to create and search for others using usernames. This development, observed in the Android beta version, is a move by the Meta-owned messaging service to enhance user privacy and convenience.
The digital informer WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp is in the midst of perfecting the username functionality, which will enable users to find and interact with one another simply by entering a username. Mirroring Telegram's user search feature, this update would allow WhatsApp users to engage with new contacts without the need to exchange telephone numbers.
The upcoming feature was unveiled through a screenshot revealed by WABetaInfo, demonstrating a search bar within the app that can locate individuals based on their name, username, or number. By utilizing this capability, WhatsApp is increasing the privacy of communications, allowing individuals to converse without disclosing their personal contact details. Additionally, users will have the flexibility to choose, change, or eliminate their username.
The introduction of this username search function is scheduled for a future release on the Android platform, with no specific details about the deployment date currently disclosed.
In other news, last month, reports surfaced about WhatsApp developing channel usernames, which would permit subscribers to access channels directly through a unique identifier. Moreover, the iOS beta version of WhatsApp revealed work on a new username selection tool back in October, highlighting that the use of unique usernames involving letters, digits, and selected symbols will be voluntary.
WhatsApp's dedication to privacy has been evident in its recent rollout of a Secret Code feature for locked chats, bolstering the security of private conversations behind a code. With locked chats, sensitive exchanges are already safeguarded via a device's PIN, passcode, facial recognition, or fingerprint scan. With these continuous updates, WhatsApp is solidifying its reputation as a platform prioritizing user privacy and secure communication.
